I found out about this Mouldmaker card game from Ralf Durrwachter of the VDWF and once I got my hand on a deck and played a round at home, I just had to connect with the creator to find out where the motivation came from, the creative process for developing a card game and other related educational projects he is working on.  Profession Ritter also shares his perspective on the future of education & training in moldmaking in Germany and worldwide, as well as who he believes our future mold builders will need to be.

Here are just a few tidbits from this conversation to whet your appetite for our full conversation:

  • From mechanical engineering to plastics to obtained PhD to mass production to start-up company to automotive development to academia
  • Not game based or only some elements, it is a real game.
  • The base elements of a mold need to be taught. This is missing.
  • A mold from the outside is a boring piece of metal but from the inside it is a fascinating technical world!
  • Together with graduate class student Professor Ritter did research on games before launching this card game.
  • School Tool is a teaching world based on very small molds (look for some show-n-tell during this conversation)—includes small molds teach the basics.
  • Created prototypes to work through the game development process.
  • School Tool HC (handcrafted) mold projects with tutorials and teaching material to teach students and apprentices.
  • Professor Ritter set out to prove he could make a mold with only minimal manual equipment.
  • Added initiative is to teach about recycled plastics.
  • And so much more!
