One of the responsibilities of the Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) is to formulate and issue industry guidelines and practices. Last year, the Mold Making team identified the need to revise the “Customs and Practices of the Mold Making Industry” document, which hadn’t been revised since the mid 1990s.

The Customs & Practices (“C&P”) document is meant to assist mold buyers and moldmakers by providing descriptions and terminologies to help standardize and streamline the mold procurement process. It is this guide that documents common practices for payment terms, mold tolerances, and classifications of molds (e.g., Class 101, 102 etc.). Also, basic templates are provided as a starting point for a Mold Data Sheet when quoting, as well as a Progress Report template.

Recently the C&P document’s revisions were completed by the team of Glenn Starkey of Progressive Components, Toby Bral of MSI Mold Builders and Camille Sackett of Accede Mold & Tool.  The team has arrived at the milestone point for circulating this draft to the industry for feedback.

Any and all industry stakeholders are welcome to share your input via this two-step process:

  1. Review the revision HERE—checking the topics covered, content provided and terminology used. Does anything stand out as insufficient or incorrect?
  2. The document has line numbers listed on the left side of each page, and a survey form is provided HERE for your input. Along with any specific thoughts on a particular line item, one can also share broad thoughts in the space provided should you feel that would assist

The goal is to receive all feedback by September 30, 2021, so the team can review comments and make further revisions. The target date for releasing this document is mid-October 2021.
