Five-axis machines, such as the Gen Mill 5X-24 from Expand Machinery, offer many moldmaking advantages, particularly where complex geometric cavities require a smooth and accurate surface finish, which is achieved through optimized toolpath and cutting angle control. The 5X-24’s ability to rotate and tilt the tool in multiple directions gives it access to hard-to-reach surfaces all in one setup, which increases accuracy and reduces labor and lead time for faster mold production.
Optimized tool paths are another advantage to this machine, where wasteful air cutting is greatly reduced and the need for tool changes is minimized for improved overall machining efficiency. The five-axis’ ability to maintain a consistent angle of engagement between the shortest tool possible and the workpiece is critical for both tool life and surface finish.
The 5X-24 has travels of 24.41" (X-axis), 20.47" (Y-axis) and 18.11" (Z-axis) at 1,417 IPM for rapid production. It is capable of machining workpiece dimensions up to 20.47" in diameter and 13" in height. It features a 15,000 rpm inline direct-drive beltless “Big-Plus” spindle and a 60-tool, high-speed twin-arm toolchanger. Its increased flexibility, precision and efficiency enables manufacturers to create intricate molds with shorter lead times and better surfaces finishes, which contribute to improve product quality and reduced production costs.
Expand Machinery offers 12" and 24" trunnion sizes in its five-axis machine lineup. Beyond moldmaking, the 5X-24 CNC machining center can be used for a wide range of complex machining tasks, including in aerospace and automotive industries.
