James Bourne has been a valued and regular contributor to MMT, writing his popular “In the Trenches” columns that reveal, unabashedly, the trials and triumphs of his life as a tool repair supervisor.

Today’s Throwback Thursday blog replays part one of a two-part feature from June 2013 titled “Shaving with Occam’s Razor.” What is Occam’s Razor? According to Bourne, who applies it to what he and multiple other mold repair professionals deal with every day, it’s a theory to be applied when faced with solving a challenging mold or part defect and the answers don’t come easily. He chose to quote one of my all-time favorite literary characters, Sherlock Holmes, who interpreted Occam’s Razor as follows: “How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?”

So, let’s revisit a frustrating, yet enlightening, tooling repair challenge shared by James Bourne where applying Occam’s Razor was rather apropos. I’ll share part two next time.
