This Polishing Pointers article from MMT's archives hit the streets in January 2000, but the tricks shared by its polishing guru author may still stand today.

There are three steps to take to get a perfectly invisible weld:

1. Pre-heat the block to about 600ºF.

2. Then micro weld (a tiny rod is used under low-amperage leaving small beads of weld).

3. Post-heat so the block cools as one piece. By preheating the block to 600°F and using low amperage micro welding, the hard rings are simply never formed in the first place. That's the whole secret. If high heat welding is forming rings, don't high heat weld!
