On the heels of earning a runner-up designation for their local Employer of the Year award, Erie-based Plastikos and Micro Mold are now being recognized nationally for workplace excellence. Micro Mold, Co. earned the No. 1 designation and Plastikos secured the No. 2 spot on PlasticsNews’ inaugural 2014 “Best Places to Work” award.

The award was designed to identify and honor the U.S. and Canadian plastics industry’s best employers. Eligible companies for this award included: plastic processors, recyclers, raw material suppliers and compounders, as well as moldmakers.  Best Companies Group of Harrisburg, Pa., gathered extensive data with input from employee and management surveys to independently determine the winners. The detailed surveys contained questions that evaluated an individual’s current role in the company and future opportunities for growth, an individual’s relationship with his/her supervisor, the effectiveness of internal communications, employer benefit programs, employee training and continuing education opportunities, and safety and work environment, among others. The official Top 10 “Best Places to Work” rankings were revealed last week in Tampa, Fla.

“We believe that great employees at every level are fundamental to Micro Mold’s and Plastikos’ ability to consistently exceed our customers’ expectations,” said Micro Mold President Ryan Katen. “I am so proud of our entire team, and the passion that every member brings to the companies.  We are deeply honored by this recognition.”

A strong, collaborative culture is a cornerstone philosophy for the custom injection molder and moldmaker. This strategic approach has consistently earned awards for both companies that have grown to employ more than 120 total employees while maintaining a turnover rate of less than three percent.  Well over 50% of Micro Mold’s employees have 20+ years of service with the company, and both companies have utilized a progressive recruitment and retention strategy that embraces professionalism, diversity, teamwork, and excellence.

Additionally, both companies were recognized for excellent employee training and continuing education opportunities that exist beyond the high school and college classroom. For example, Plastikos’ process engineers are sent to a rigorous external training program, provided by RJG in order to become Master Molder Level I and Level II certified. Training opportunities are also available across all other departments including, sales, human resources, production, quality, maintenance, and management.  Finally, both companies were recognized for its generous bonus program and 401(k) retirement plans, which are structured around both company and individual performance throughout the year.

It’s with tremendous pride that we accept the awards as the #1 and the #2 “Best Places to Work” in the plastics industry across the U.S. and Canada.  The owners and management team at Micro Mold and Plastikos would like to sincerely thank everyone who helped to make both companies such as a unique and special place to build a career.
