HIPIMS+

In the summer of 2010, Hitachi Tool Engineering tested several samples of their cutting tools coated with HIPIMS+, the technology developed by Hauzer Techno Coating (Conover, NC). The results exceeded the expectations. "We are very pleased that what we expected in our research and development has proven to be accurate and even better in the real circumstances of precision tools", says Lucien Peeters, product manager tool at Hauzer.

The HIPIMS+ by Hauzer technology has several advantages over arc and sputtering. It combines a high deposition rate and excellent adhesion (like arc) with the smoothness of sputtering. Furthermore HIPIMS+ by Hauzer provides the possibility to combine a high hardness with a tuneable residual stress. The technology is also very suitable for low temperature deposition.

The tests by Hitachi Tool showed that during fifty meters wet machining of stainless steel the flank wear of cutting tools coated with HIPIMS+ by Hauzer was 66 percent less than flank wear on tools coated with DC sputtering and 36 percent less than flank wear on tools coated with arc ion plating technology. During hundred metres dry machining of stainless steel, the results were even more astonishing. Tools coated with HIPIMS+ by Hauzer technology showed 48% less flank wear than tools coated with arc ion plating technology, whereas the tools coated with DC sputtering had been damaged before the end of the test.
