Engineered electroless nickel plating from Bales Mold Service is designed to protect molds from corrosion and abrasion. EN can be deposited on most tool steels, including beryllium copper and aluminum, at a controlled thickness ranging from 0.00005 to 0.001 inch. Two of the company’s EN-based products, Nicklon and Nibore, offer added lubricity as well, aiding in part release and decreasing cycle time. In most cases, these engineered coatings can eliminate the need for mold release sprays, the company says.

EN plating also can indicate when preventative maintenance is required on a mold. According to Bales Mold, when the coating starts to wear and the base material is visible, the mold should be stripped and the plating reapplied.
