Developed in partnership with Linear AMS (a Moog company), TruCool solutions from Milacron’s DME brand are highly complex mold cavities, cores and components with conformal cooling channels produced using direct metal laser melting. According to the company, the process achieves shapes, paths and channel geometries impossible to obtain with conventional tooling.

The process starts with 3D CAD modeling and finite element analysis to simulate optimal cooling channels that provide greater overall coverage, even distribution of cooling and individual insert temperature control.

Direct metal laser melting (DMLM) technology is said to be denser and stronger than direct metal laser sintering (DMLS), allowing for lighter-weight solutions with improved performance characteristics. Milacron says TruCool solutions allow for cycle time reduction, thermal control, improved quality, less scrap, increased flexibility in waterline designs, and the ability to visualize flow capabilities and thermal properties.
