Big Area Additive Manufacturing, Big Hit
Since a show floor presentation on additive manufacturing by Oak Ridge National Laboratories (ORNL) was a hit during Amerimold, I'm here to promote this Fall's Additive Manufacturing Conference presented by Gardner Business Media and hosted by ORNL. The focus of this conference is industrial applications of additive technologies for making functional components and end-use production parts. It will cover the processes, applications and materials to give you practical knowledge on how to implement AM in your facility.

The presentation during Amerimold highlighted ORNL Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) technology that has the capability to deposit components that are 10x larger, 100x cheaper, and 100x faster than current polymer-based commercial systems. ORNL's Manufacturing Demonstration Facility recently partnered with Cincinnati Inc. to commercialize a large scale 3D printer (BAAM-CI) and has demonstrated the "real-time" production of an automobile body at the International Manufacturing Technology Show in coordination with Local Motors. At Amerimold attendees learned about the latest applications of the BAAM technology, including the production of large components and tooling for automotive and aerospace industries. This research is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Advanced Manufacturing Office, under contract DE-AC05-00OR22725 with UT-Battelle, LLC. pm

The conference will include a special tour of the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at ORNL, and attendees will have the opportunity to tour Local Motor's brand new facility opening in June in Knoxville, where they are printing cars.
