Makino Showcases CNC, Software Advances
Here are a few examples of developments unveiled at the machine tool builder's 2015 Technology Expo in Auburn Hills, Michigan.
While most wire and sinker EDM machines use different interfaces that require operators to learn separate control standards, the uniform Hyper-i control systems allow operators to more easily transition from one machine to the next and efficiently process work for any EDM application. The interface is designed to operate similarly to cell phones and tablets. The control also boasts intelligent functions like EZCut, which allows the operator to change machining speed with a convenient slide bar; an ECO Mode that enables energy reduction during machine idle state; and automatic creation of machine utilization charts to help measure and assess operational efficiency.
The event marked the debut of SGI.5, the latest version of the company’s Super Geometric Intelligence software for high-feedrate, tight-tolerance machining of c Depending upon the specific geometry of the application, SGI.5 can provide 20 to 60 percent faster cycle times while maintaining accuracy and surface finishes, the company says. It is particularly useful for complex, three-dimensional contoured shapes like the part shown here. This particular display demonstrated cycle time improvements achieved throughout different versions of SGI technology: 38 minutes, 49 seconds for the part on the left, machined with the first version, and 14 minutes, 22 seconds for the part on the right, machined with the latest version.
Makino also introduced the Professional 6 (Pro6) control, which is designed to move operators fluidly through machine set up, empower them with easily accessible information and protect them with enhanced safety. Familiar functionality has been maintained from the previous Pro5 control while simplifying the human-machine interface (HMI) with an advanced touch-screen layout that’s reduced the number of hard buttons. Screen customization, code and parameter search, guidance functions and other machine information are now available at the operator’s fingertips.
A few weeks back, attendees hoping to view new advances in EDM and milling technology at Makino's "Technology Days" open house in Auburn Hills, Michigan certainly weren't disappointed. Although seeing everything and attending all the presentations would have been a tall order even with two full days. One trend that stood out amongt the many advances was the company's focus on the proverbial "brains" of the machine--the control and the software that drives it.
