MAG Cincinnati (Hebron, KY) brings the lean revolution to machining of extra-large complex geometry parts, with its MAG Cincinnati U5 1500 universal machining center. Five-axis/five-side machining and automatic interchangeable head capability deliver faster processing to reduce work-in-process on large, high-value parts, while avoiding refixturing and setups for greater part accuracies. It offers 75 percent larger ram and crossrail to provide superior stability and machining accuracy in heavy cutting and enable greater Z-axis travel—to 1.5 m (5 ft)—to accommodate taller parts. The U5 1500 provides 4.3 m (14 ft) to unlimited X-axis travel and 3.6 m (12 ft) Y-axis range to go with extended Z-axis travel. It makes large, tough cuts in big parts of aluminum, steel and titanium. Five-axis and head-change capabilities minimizes machine downtime for part reorientation and setups, undesirable for massive workpieces Several different U5 head configurations cover the spectrum of machining requirements, including two different 5-axis heads—50 taper, 22 kW (30 hp), 4,000 or 6,000 rpm, and HSK63A, 30 kW (50 hp), 15,000 or 24,000 rpm—as well as vertical or horizontal 50 taper heads providing 22 kW (30 hp) at 6,000 rpm. Strong, rigid rails feature proven boxway technology and racks for smooth, powerful movement. The base machine comes standard with 4.3 m (14 ft) of travel and can be expanded in 3.7 m (12 ft) increments.
