The EPDR Corner Radius end mill from Hitachi Tool (Novi, MI) is the newest addition to the company’s line-up of sub-micrograin carbide tools for high performance die/mold machining. Designed for high-precision and high-speed milling of deep rib grooves, slots, and corners in materials up to HRC70, the end mills are suitable for die and mold applications that are traditionally performed by EDM. The end mills’ unique compound neck shape greatly improves breakage resistance and suppresses chatter during milling. In addition, they feature the Back-Draft Effect: a 1.5° to 6° back taper on their peripheral edges that allows them to avoid contact with the workpiece. Conventional end mills without this effect cannot avoid contact with the workpiece, which leads to tool deflection, chatter and vibration. The end mills are coated with the company’s TH Nano-Composite Coating, which achieves extraordinary heat resistance and hardness thanks its composite layers consisting of nano-crystal material. The end mills are available in diameters from 0.2mm to 3mm in a wide variety of neck lengths and corner radii.
