Okamoto Corporation has announced the introduction of the UPZ-210Li, a new style of profile grinder designed to deliver a new degree of ultra-high precision in grinding carbide and punch die profile jobs. The new UPZ-210Li was designed for ultra precision profile grinding of stamping punch dies for narrow pitch connector parts for the IC industry. The machine is equipped with linear motor drive instead of hydraulic cylinder drive. The grinder can achieve up to 300 reciprocations / minute (0.79” stroke table stroke). The advanced linear system eliminates ball screw issue (back rush, pitching, yawing problems) as well as thermal expansion. Table high speed reciprocation allows for high efficiency grinding with less thermal distortion—particularly on micro profile workpieces--thanks to continuous infeed. Other system advantages over optical profile grinding machines are: horizontal type design for easy loading and unloading; continuous coolant supply to minimize workpiece; thermal expansion and improve surface finish; and, set up multiple workpieces per load. It is difficult to precisely re-fixture a workpiece after removal from the work table. The UPZ-210Li features profile measurement capability without removal of the workpiece. This is accomplished through use of a CCD camera system together with 0.1µm increment longitudinal movement in closed loop system (option). Benefits are: improve repeatability; ease of measurement—auto focus CCD camera; and, 100 – 1000 magnification for CCD camera.
