Fowler High Precision’s zCat portable direct computer control coordinate measuring machine (DCC CMM) is designed to take automated, repeatable 3D measurements directly in the manufacturing process, so that the person making the part can also measure the part. The DCC technology enables operators to teach the machine what they want it to measure then allow the device to take over.

The 30-lb CMM measures 620 × 420 mm, with a 172-mm-diameter base. A rotary encoder in the base supports 360-degree rotation, enabling parts to be nested around the device’s perimeter and measured all at once. A Renishaw TP20 probe system rotates 360 degrees as well, and the horizontal stylus can rotate and orient to the part as well.

The machine is powered by a 10.8-V lithium ion battery that allows for as many as four hours of use in the field before recharging is needing. In addition, Wi-Fi capabilities let the CMM automatically transfer data to a PC in a variety of formats, including an Excel spreadsheet.
