Open Mind Technologies’ HyperMill 2013 CAM software features several strategies designed to overcome typical machining challenges faced by tool and mold manufacturers, including a rib milling cycle that automatically detects grooves that need to be milled as deep, narrow cavities for ribs in molds. Steep areas and floors are machined separately. Depending on the workpiece geometry, the system selects a suitable roughing strategy, and contiguous areas are completely machined.

The software also features an extension for five-axis contour offset finishing using barrel cutters. This strategy uses the large effective radius of the barrel cutter with a point-milling contract style, allowing for increased step-over distances between passes for free-form surfaces.

The integrated HyperMaxx roughing module combines optimal milling paths, maximum material removal and short machining times. Ideally distributed milling paths and dynamic feed rate adjustment to existing cutting conditions ensure that milling always takes place at the fastest possible feed rate, the company says. Machining is performed using climb milling, featuring a spiral retraction of tool movements that increasingly approximate the required contour as they reach the end. The tool path is calculated taking into consideration chip volume, machine data, material to be cut and balanced movement.
