For Spectrum Plastics Group in Minneapolis, the Internally Heated Molding Machine Nozzles from Melt Design, Inc. (MDi), a leading manufacturer of runnerless injection molding systems, were the answer to a demanding molding project that was costing the company undue maintenance and material waste.

Spectrum Plastics Group, based in Minneapolis, MN, provides injection molding services to the medical, defense, industrial, aerospace and electronics markets from its state-of-the-art facilities in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Ansonia, Connecticut.

Tom Ries, who is Senior Project Engineer at Spectrum’s Minneapolis plant, described the challenging project: "We had an application with a high end industrial product that had both high visual and dimensional demands. When we first approached MDi, we were running around 30% fall-out, molding a wide spec resin that our customer required us to use. We had already tried utilizing a cold-runner mold, and then when that didn’t work we went to a hot sprue with no success and we really did not see any gains by doing that.

"This was the first time we worked with MDi," Ries continued. "I knew that they had internally heated nozzle bodies, but had never tried them. We installed one of them on the molding machine and our scrap rate dropped to less than 5%. That’s a huge difference and it gave us absolute control over the heat in the material, which had been problematic until the MDi nozzles were used. It worked smoothly, and our technicians, who previously had to deal with uneven heating of the material, could let the mold run without daily adjustments, saving valuable downtime."

"They’re worth it."

Ries acknowledges that Melt Design’s internally heated machine nozzles are expensive compared to standard nozzles with band heaters, but the benefits have far outweighed the cost.

"They are worth it when you look at the savings in material and processing time," he states. "In addition, MDi offered both timely and effective technical support. We were so impressed by their nozzle’s performance that we have already ordered a few more."
