Unlike general-purpose horizontals that possess unnecessary capabilities and result in extended cycle times, Makino’s a40 HMC was purpose-built for non-ferrous die-cast parts machining. The machine offers a 400-mm pallet with a workpiece capacity of 630 mm (24.8") in diameter by 900 mm (35.4") tall, accommodating die cast parts commonly machined in the automotive and consumer product industries. XYZ-axis travels are 560 × 640 × 640 mm (22.0" × 25.2" × 25.2"), and maximum payload is 400 kg (880 lbs). Other features include a 40-position automatic toolchanger and an automatic pallet change system to ensure uninterrupted operation.

The a40 does use several of the proven systems from the company’s 1-Series HMCs, including single-piece X- and Z-axis covers, center-trough chip and coolant management, and dual-supported ATC mechanisms. However, it also offers vision-type broken tool detection, which validates the condition of the cutting tools after each tool change; dedicated tool-taper cleaning nozzles that wash the tool taper with filtered coolant at each tool change; and three- stage coolant filtration, which eliminates coolant tank sludge common with aluminum machining and extends the time between coolant-system preventive maintenance.
