Their rigid bridge-type construction, high-tech spindles, multi-pallet changers, matrix-type tool magazines, and reliable swarf removal systems permit long periods of unattended operation for maximum output without sacrificing accuracy or repeatability. The VMCs’ cassette tool magazine provides tool-change times as low as 0.56 seconds (tool-to-tool) and allows the number of tool storage locations to be expanded in steps of 30, up to a maximum of 240. To reduce maintenance, the VMCs machining centers have grease-lubricated ceramic spindle bearings and long-life grease packs on all linear guides and ball screws. Models MAM72-3VM, MAM72-3VS, and MAM72-35V have built-in pallet changers and come standard with the Fanuc 16i-MA CNC control and large, high-precision ball screws that allow positioning accuracy of ±0.00031” and repeatability of ±0.000078”. The standard 12,000 rpm spindle offers 123 ft-lbs of torque (up to 630 rpm). The maximum feed and rapid-traverse rate is 1575 ipm in the X, Y, and Z axes. Model MAM72-3VM stores up to 180 pallets. Model MAM72-63V is a trunnion-type unit designed for simultaneous 5-axis machining of large, complex components. This model has the largest Y-axis stroke in its class (33.26”), a maximum work size of ø24.8” x H17.7”, a working surface of ø19.68”, and a loading capacity of 880 lbs. Equipped with a high-precision scale feedback system and the Matsuura G-Tech 30i CNC, it achieves feedrates and rapid traverses to 1968 ipm and accelerations of 0.6 G on its X, Y, and Z axes. The standard 12,000 rpm spindle provides 138 ft-lbs of torque up to 1120 rpm. Model MAM72-25V is compact, with a maximum work size of ø11.81” x H9.84”, a working surface of ø6.69”, and a loading capacity of 88 lbs. On its X, Y, and Z axes it attains feedrates and rapid traverses to 1968 ipm, rapid-traverse accelerations to 0.6 G, and feedrate accelerations to 0.4 G. A 15,000 rpm spindle speed is standard.
