GF AgieCharmilles' (Lincolnshire, IL) FO350 SP increases the speed of diesinking EDM through integration of a variety of innovative new technologies. Based on the company’s FO350 standard, the machine represents the next step in the evolution of diesinking EDM.

The FO350 SP contains microprocessors that allow for automation of the machining of openings from roughing to finishing. This is accomplished via the automatic step-by-step execution of elementary machining operations, machining cycles and part programs. The system also automates other necessary operations between programs, such as tool changing and the filling and draining of the work tank.

To further push EDM performance in terms of speed, wear and surface finish, the machine is equipped with a high speed Z-axis and high speed finishing feature. Additionally, the machine also is compatible with the company’s optional iQ module that allows for almost zero wear with electrodes in graphite and copper.

The FO350 SP features a space-saving compact design and 3-sided drop tank to provide easy access to the work area. Collision protection is offered on all axes and the industry leading DPControl suggests ideal electrode undersize and rationalized the number of electrodes necessary for effective machining. DPControl also enables close monitoring with the automated production features of Expert Systems, and all information related to machining status can be transmitted directly to the operator via SMS.

To maximize productivity, the machine offers a traverse rate of 2.36"/second on the X, Y and Z axes. Maximum accuracy is sustained through 0.00002"-resolution glass scales on all axes. The machine can handle workpieces up to 31.5" x 21.7" x 14.6" weighing up to 1,100 lbs and accommodates electrodes of up to 110 lbs.
