Cube Mold System to Produce PET Preforms

Foboha GmbH will debut in the U.S. use of its cube mold system to produce PET preforms using Trexel MuCell technology in the oPTI process developed by Plastics Technology Inc. (PTI).

Foboha GmbH will debut in the U.S. use of its cube mold system to produce PET preforms using Trexel MuCell technology in the oPTI process developed by Plastics Technology Inc. (PTI). The mold will run on a Ferromatik Milacron K-TEC 200 Cube two-component injection molding machine with 2,000 kN clamping force.

The oPTI process produces bottles with a special metallic effect but without the addition of any metallic pigments, enabling them to be recycled as standard PET bottles. According to Foboha, coupling its cube mold technology with Ferromatik Milacron’s injection molding platform results in an increased number of cavities in the mold, thereby significantly increasing output. The two-component machine consists of a horizontal injection unit, connected with a MuCell system, that blends a gas-nitrogen mixture with the melt. The gas expands in the mold and generates a foam. After a 90-degree turn of the cube, the inner foam is sheathed with a second injection unit. At the later injection blow molding stage, the thread is also made from this compact outer skin.
