Millstar’s (Warren, MI) BDS series—a two flute bull nose insert design—was is designed to facilitate multi-axis machining of dies, molds, and similar free form three-dimensional surfaces while performing high speed or hard milling. The unique crossover type design allows end users to exceed performance characteristics of traditional back draft or straight wall style inserts by combining the technologies on one insert. The operator has the opportunity to take larger depth of cuts with out leaving scallops at feed rates comparable to back draft type inserts. Benefits are seen in a variety of applications such as pocket milling, and steep-wall milling in materials up to HRc 62. The following are advantages of using the inserts : the use of premium sub-micron carbide substrate add strength and toughness; the unique grind and proprietary heat-defying EXALON coating ensure world class performance at a reasonable price; shorter cycle times are achieved by increased chip removal capability and the larger axial depth of cut. These factors make the insert series the ideal choice for time-conscious, cost-effective, unattended runs.
