The long-term trends in household spending on energy is upward, and they are expected to continue upward for the foreseeable future. This will result in two large areas of opportunity for moldmakers in the coming years. One area is increased demand for energy from alternative fuel sources such as wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, etc. The other area is in products that make more efficient use of energy consumption—such as green building materials, fuel-efficient cars and other modes of transportation, advanced grid technology, "smart" appliances, etc.
