After a sharp spike last summer due to the "Cash for Clunkers" program, sales of cars and trucks in the U.S. held up well in the fourth quarter of 2009. The data are well above year-ago levels, but further improvement will be very gradual. Consumers are constrained by low confidence levels, high unemployment rates and sluggish income growth. All of these trends will improve in 2010, and growth in vehicle sales will be strong in 2011.
