New Report Names Manufacturing Challenges
The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and the Council of Manufacturing Associations (CMA; a division of NAM) have released a new report that reaffirms the importance of manufacturing to the U.S. economy, but points out the mounting challenges. The report, entitled “Manufacturing Resurgence—A Must for U.S. Prosperity,” is the third in a series of economic reports by Joel Popkin and Company—a Washington, DC-based economic consulting firm.
The 34-page report—written by Joel Popkin and Kathryn Kobe—features data and analysis about the importance of U.S. manufacturing to the nation’s economy; and recommends numerous strategies to create manufacturing jobs and stimulate manufacturing innovation and productivity, including:
• Reducing the corporate income tax rate;
• A permanent R&D tax credit;
• Making policy decisions now to guide private-sector R&D investments in clean energy technologies;
• Improving the U.S. education system, especially in the science, technology, engineering and math fields (STEM);
• Supporting small business viability by widening the lowest corporate income tax bracket, and;
• Investing in all levels of infrastructure.
The report concludes with a summary and policy recommendations, which includes information on how the manufacturing industry can regenerate the U.S. manufacturing base and how government can support these endeavors. The report concludes with the following statement: “U.S. manufacturers continue to step up and meet the challenges of cyclical downturn and structural readjustment. Their efforts are beginning to show some successes. But to remain strong players in a competitive world will require continued focus on innovation and productivity gains, helped along by government policies that will
smooth the path to success. This report and these recommendations are intended to be helpful in lifting the curtain on a resurgence of U.S. production that will bring with it the fruits of a higher standard of living for all Americans.”

Newly Patented PERC System Revolutionizes Injection Molding of Components with Threads
B A Die Mold, a leader in the design and manufacture of precision molds, was recently awarded a patent for its exclusive PERC System, a green alternative to conventional hydraulics for molders of threaded parts. The PERC System revolutionizes the way manufacturers mold plastic threaded parts. It is a compact, high speed, high torque and high precision system utilizing programmable servo motors in place of hydraulics for unscrewing applications. Advantages include: • Accurate, fast and efficient core positioning with unlimited turns & programmable speed profiles • Virtually maintenance free • Scheduling is not dictated by the availability of auxiliary hydraulic equipment • PERC’s compact size makes for fast, easy set-ups • Eliminates messy hydraulic oils • Complements the efficiencies of electric molding machines; allows use of smaller presses “More and more, our customers - especially those in the medical and water filtration/plumbing industries - are asking us to quote the PERC System,” states Francine Petrucci, B A Die Mold’s president. “PERC delivers not only cutting edge molding technology, but it fits into today’s pursuit of energy management and green manufacturing initiatives. Just the elimination of the messy hydraulic cylinders used in conventional unscrewing is a plus. Maintenance techs love the PERC System because it makes their jobs easier!”
