August’s cover shows the machining of a mold insert for a PET bottle mold. The Heidenhain TNC 640 control allowed the operator to machine the cavity in full five-axis using the dynamic precision features of the CNC as well as the mill-turn functions to machine the casing flange and the insert in the same setup. This ensured perfect concentricity, as the part did not need to be moved from the milling machine to a lathe. See related story on page 12 of our digital edition.

Here are five great tips from this issue:

Featured Content

1 Understanding how data is processed helps to select the appropriate CNC control for a five-axis machine to optimize machining time, surface finish quality and workpiece accuracy.

2 With everything housed inside the internal valve gate nozzle, mold designers can create smaller molds that cost less to produce and operate in smaller injection molding machines.

3 Increase use of cameras and lasers on the shop floor by integrating them at the molding presses and enhance in-line inspection of parts as the parts move down the conveyors.

4  Job-tracking software works with a company’s existing CAD and accounting software, which enables users to track job status and quote status and profit-and-loss data without having to invest in additional new software.

5 The successful use of recycled plastics materials in injection molding is contingent upon how the original parts are recycled and re-pelletized.
