Watch Solutions for Hard Milling
Makino demonstrates the latest techniques and technologies for high-speed machining of hardened materials for die or mold applications. Check out tips, tricks, and new technologies you can use to mill the toughest steels, shortening your lead times, lowering your costs, and eliminating bench work.

Next what we want to talk about is technology transfer. What we refer to by technology transfer learning the details of how to hard mill. One way we do this at Makino is a die/mold process training class. In this class, we share information that we have acquired in testing, in time and use, and through partnerships with our customers. We've learned how our customers are cutting, and apply that knowledge with the feedback they provide us when using particular techniques, cutters, or tool paths in 60 Rockwell materials.

We take all of that information and throw it into our technology transfer class which we use to teach people in the industry how to cut hardened materials, how to get to high performance machining, machining techniques, etc.

Here is an example of a customer who is cutting 60 Rockwell on a daily basis. Their particular application required a lot of jig boring. With the techniques, machinery, tooling, and software we've talked about today they've been able to eliminate all jig boring while improving the final quality of their parts. Their process times have decreased due to the elimination of this secondary process, and they've been able to reduce overall machining time by cutting the parts in a hardened state. They cut dowel holes. They cut louvers. They cut die buttons. All of these parts are cut in 60 Rockwell and finished without any secondary machining. They are just one example of a customer who is cutting on a day to day basis 60 Rockwell material and has been extremely successful doing it.
