On the pages of this magazine, on our Web site and at our annual Expo and technical conference, it has always been our mission to bring you the experts and stories that will help you learn about the technology and business strategies for improving your’s shop efficiency, productivity and profitability, but this year we have incorporated an expanded component to our technical conference, which will include lectures and live demos in one environment for one afternoon prior to the official start of MoldMaking Expo 2008 (April 23-24 in Novi, MI).

We are inviting registered, full or one-day conference attendees to go on location for a half-day technical workshop that will examine three machining technologies through technical presentations accompanied by an appropriate live cutting demonstration. More than 15 different machines will be on display and ready for action.
This program called: “New Technologies in Mold Manufacturing: Process Presentations and Live Machining Demos” will take place on April 22nd at Makino’s Die/Mold Technologies Center in Auburn Hills, MI, where participants will experience the sights and sounds of micro moldmaking, hard milling and 2+3 machining in action alongside their respective technical lecture.

• Micro Mold Manufacturing: A comparison of milling and EDM processes in the manufacture of a medical staple mold and a micro-gear mold.
• The Evolution of High-Performance Hard Milling: The latest techniques in feeds and speeds, depth-of-cut, cutting conditions, toolpath generation and tool selection for materials 50Hrc and harder.
• A Comparison of 2+3 Machining and 5-Axis for Mold Manufacture: Actual cutting tests to help uncover why 2+3 machining might be a better fit than full 5-axis processing for your mold application.

Equipment on display will include the following:

• VMC for micro milling and a VMC for hard milling
• Five-axis VMC for five-axis/2+3 machining for moldmaking
• VMC for large molds
• Ram EDM for micromachining
• Wire EDM high precision
• Horizontal Wire EDM for high precision
• Ram EDM for high quality surface finish for molds
• Large WEDM
• HMC with high-speed spindle for molds and dies
• Automation technology
